Five Hens Farm, LLC

Website: www.facebook.com/FiveHensFarm

After starting with just five hens behind our neighborhood home, we moved to the country in 2011 to be able to expand our flock and teach our children where food comes from—the farm! We now raise garden vegetables, melons, wild blackberries, heritage breed, free-range, pastured chickens (and eggs) & turkeys, bees, few pigs, Nigerian Dwarf goats, a steer, and a horse. We’ve also planted an small apple orchard and some blueberry bushes.

While many farms specialize in one product or animal, we prefer diversity. After all, variety is the spice of life! Our chicken flock is made up of 8 different breeds (Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Auracanas (“Easter Eggers”), a Delaware, a Jersey Giant, and a Welsummer. Some aren’t as frequent layers as others, but they lay better though the winter. We have two heritage breed turkey flocks: Bourbon Reds and Royal Palms.

Our chicken feed contains no medications nor antibiotics, and we use food grade Diatomaceous earth as a wormer. As of April 27, 2013, we now use locally grown, non-GMO, non-Soy feed from Resaca Sun Feed, out of Resaca, GA. We also supplement with spent barley from a local micro-brew.

Our eggs are packaged and sold under the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture Candler’s Certification License Number 5384.

In February 2014, our Jersey gave birth to a Murray Grey x Jersey calf. He was bottle fed, raised and finished on grass with a small amount of spent brewer’s grain from a local micro-brew to supplement our pasture. We hope to add more beef cattle, but need some more fence work completed first.
