THIS WEEK

It’s a busy, busy time of year but don’t let that distract you from purchasing healthy local food our farmers have available. This is a great time of year to stock up and preserve by canning or dehydrating all the wonderful produce we have coming in. Fall is one of our more fruitful seasons and you’ll see an abundance through to December.

CANE CREEK FARM ANNOUNCES FALL CSA

Local, Seasonal Food Picked Up Weekly from Family-Owned Farm

CUMMING, GA (August 1, 2016) – Cane Creek Farm, located in the western part of Forsyth County near Cumming, sits on almost eighteen acres along Cane Creek. The farm has four acres in cultivation with fields of vegetables and flowers, orchard and fruit trees, berries, pastures of sheep, cows and chickens, and over 200 shitake mushroom logs. The farm is managed using organic practices to produce clean, nutritious produce for the community.

Cane Creek Farm’s fall CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) begins the week of August 10 and extends for 12 weeks, with pick-up at the farm on Wednesdays or Saturdays or at Johns Creek Yoga on Tuesdays. Sign up continues beyond the week of August 10 and extends for 12 weeks from the date of registration.

“A CSA is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from farmers,” says Cane Creek Farm Owner Lynn Pugh. “Our CSA includes a weekly harvest of seasonal produce including fruits, vegetables and pick-your-own herbs and flowers. Fall is my favorite CSA season!”

Medium and large CSA shares are available. Members also receive a weekly electronic newsletter with farm happenings, weekly share items, recipes and nutrition tips.

Fall shares include okra, eggplant, a variety of peppers, peas, beans, pumpkins, carrots, tomatillos, edamame, sweet potatoes, malabar spinach, squash, muscadine grapes, lettuces, Asian greens, kale, pac choi, radishes, collards, beets and broccoli. Herbs include rosemary, chocolate mint, marjoram, basil, oregano, tarragon and savory.

“The CSA program at Cane Creek Farm has been amazing experience,” says Cumming resident Angie Platten. “My kids and I enjoy going to the farm each week to pick up our vegetables, and we sometimes volunteer to enjoy the peaceful environment and learn more about where food comes. We feel good about supporting local agriculture and eating new and healthy foods.”

To register for Cane Creek’s fall CSA, visit the farm’s website at www.canecreekfarm.net. The cost for the 12-week share is $445 for the large share and $325 for the medium share.

THIS WEEK

We’re starting into our slowest time at the market…for sales that is. The market always seems to slow down around the end of summer and first few weeks of school while we’re all busy getting our kids ready for a new year, shopping for school supplies, clothes, etc. This is unfortunate though for farmers because the farmers are not slowing down. This is the time of year farmers usually have bumper crops of cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, summer squash, zucchini and peppers that they are harvesting feverishly to make sure these valuable, nutritious foods don’t decay on the vine. Harvesting at just the right time so it’s the freshest it can be is a daily task.

It’s a great time to ask for a bulk order. Even if you don’t see it listed, you can still ask me or contact the farmer directly about buying a large amount.

Here’s some easy recipes to help get you ready.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SIMPLE SALSA
3 cups chopped tomatoes
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 cup onion, diced
1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
4 teaspoons chopped fresh jalapeno pepper (including seeds)
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Directions
Stir the tomatoes, green bell pepper, onion, cilantro, lime juice, jalapeno pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Serve.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

SIMPLE SAUCE
“A great recipe for using up extra-ripe tomatoes from the garden. Double the batch and freeze half; it freezes well.”

3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 onion, chopped
8 large tomatoes, peeled and cut into big chunks
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 bay leaf
1/2 cup red wine
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon fennel seed
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar, or more to taste

Directions
Heat olive oil in a stockpot over medium heat. Cook and stir onion in hot oil until softened, about 5 minutes; add tomatoes, garlic, and bay leaf. Bring the liquid from the tomatoes to a boil, reduce to medium-low, and simmer mixture until tomatoes are softened, about 30 minutes.

Stir red wine, honey, basil, oregano, marjoram, salt, black pepper, fennel seed, and crushed red pepper into the tomato mixture; bring again to a simmer and cook until herbs have flavored the sauce, about 30 minutes more.

Stir balsamic vinegar into the sauce.

CUCUMBER SALAD
“Cool, delicious cucumber salad. For a pretty salad, peel only half of each cucumber, leaving strips of skin on each. Don’t make the vinegar solution first and then chop the cucumber because it’s important that the vinegar solution be hot to ensure proper flavoring.”

4 cucumbers, thinly sliced
1 small white onion, thinly sliced
1 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon dried dill, or to taste

Toss together the cucumbers and onion in a large bowl. Combine the vinegar, water and sugar in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, and pour over the cucumber and onions. Stir in dill, cover, and refrigerate until cold. This can also be eaten at room temperature, but be sure to allow the cucumbers to marinate for at least 1 hour.

THIS WEEK

Seems like every year about this time, it suddenly hits me that summer is almost over and the new school year is almost upon us. Even though we might have the hottest few days of the summer this week, it’s time to start thinking about the cool season.

The new school year brings new people to town, and new customers. Welcome, all of you! We’ve already seen quite a few new faces these past few weeks. If you ever have any questions about how our market operates, please don’t hesitate to shoot me an email or talk with me during pickups. The new year also changes existing household routines, so it’s easy to forget it’s Saturday and you’ve got an order waiting for you. I do make phone calls to everyone who hasn’t arrived by 12pm. I get a lot of home phone and office numbers, so now’s a good time to make sure you’ve got a mobile number on your account if you have one. You can change your contact info and several other account details on the Your Account page of the website.

THIS WEEK…Chicken!

WELCOME
This week I’m happy to welcome a new farmer to our market, Holden Creek Farms offering pasture raised chicken. Dad and I visited them in June and were impressed by their passion for growing and caring for their animals. The chickens are raised on pasture following similar practices of Polyface Farms. If you’re unfamiliar, Polyface is Joel Salatin’s farm in Virginia. Still wondering who I’m talking about? Make sure to add his website to your reading list.
