The Weblog

The Online Market is open for ordering from 8 AM Wednesday till 8 PM on Thursday.
Spring time is upon us again. The planting of vegetables and flowers is in full spead as we work to provide an aboundance of fresh new products. Please feel free to make your selections from the great products available this week.

Remember the New Customer Referral Program
From March 20 through June 30

How it Works
1. Tell a friend about the CUMMING HARVEST farmers market.
2. Have them register at cumming.locallygrown.net. (the market managers will contact all new customers to ask who referred them)
3. After their third purchase (3 different weeks), your credit will be applied to your account.
Thank you for sharing your love of healthy food and for helping to support our local growers!

We’ve reached that busy part of the year, when the slowness of summer turns over to the hustle and bustle of another school year and the gardens go into overdrive producing more than most people can handle. Often, late in August, it gets so hot here that everything pauses (flowers can’t set fruit when it’s really hot for too long), but for now all the squash, all the tomatoes, the okra, and so forth of going gangbusters. If you’ve never tried preserving the summer harvest, now is a great time to learn. Former Athens Locally Grown member Liana Krissoff has a wonderful book, “Canning for a New Generation: Bold, Fresh Flavors for the Modern Pantry”, that is both a great introduction and a valuable resource of more seasoned folks. Equipment is easy to come by, and there’s little impediment to getting started. There are also many great online resources for preserving the summer produce, www.pickyourown.org is a good place to start.

Squash, Zucchini, Eggplant, Cucumbers are still popular this time of year and grow so well in Georgia. You will find most of the farmers selling them and what you see online is just a small amount of what they have. Plan ahead and purchase enough to preserve either by canning or freezing. If you would like a bulk order, email me or the farmer and we’ll work it out for you. http://www.pickyourown.org/freezing_summer_squash.htm

Mountain Valley Farm Grass-fed Butter http://grassfedgeorgia.com/
Order online this week. A naturally rich grass fed butter made from low temp pasteurized cream from pastured cows at Mountain Valley Farm in Elijay, Ga. The butterfat does not separate into solids and “water” as it does in commercially made butter. You will definitely notice the difference, especially in the flavor. Mountain Valley cream is turned into delicious butter by Happy Cow Creamery in South Carolina.

GROUP ORDER
I still have some Great Lakes Gelatin available and listed online.

Cheese – We are also working with Joyful Noise coop to add to her group order of Raw Organic Grass-fed cheese. She’s taking group orders, which you can find under “group orders” on our website. She will order directly from Meadow Valley Farm which is an Amish farm in Parke County, Indiana. They make raw milk cheese from grass fed Jersey cows. We don’t have much online info about them since they are Amish but there is another grocer that sells the cheeses so you can see an image and a description until Meadow Valley sends me a brochure, http://www.munciefarmstand.com/suppliers/detail/meadow-valley-farm

Insect Repellent

Southern Essentials has Insect Repellent listed online or you can make your own.

The mosquitoes are here! I personally use essential oils and have found them very effective.
Essential Oils that bugs don’t like are: Citronella, Clove, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Cedar, Lavender, and Mint.

You can find all these oils from Southern Essentials on the market website!

Here’s a great article about how to make your own homemade bug spray and why you should avoid commercial insect repellent. http://wellnessmama.com/2565/homemade-natural-bug-spray-recipes-that-work/

Group Buy

GROUP BUY – Last Week to order
Gelatin – Collagen Hydrolysate (beef kosher) Unflavored
I’m continuing to offer the group buy orders for Gelatin. You will find it listed under the “Group Buy” category so you can order it along with your normal order.
This item comes from Great Lakes Gelatin and is only shipped in boxes of 12. The order will be placed once we reach that minimum. Cold water Soluble for use in cold beverages or recipes.
Hydrolyzed Collagen is the unique combination of amino acids in concentrated levels that promotes rapid re-production of blood cells for healing and conditioning over other proteins especially for bone and joint health care. This low molecular weight protein is easily digested for healthy enrichment in minutes after ingestion. It will not congeal because it has been hydrolyzed for quick assimilation and improved hydration to the connective tissue. Collagen is important to nitrogen balance, now considered an anti-aging product as it supports age related cartilage damage, and collagen loss. This gelatin comes from all grass fed, hormone free, pesticide free and antibiotic free cows.
