Happy New Year!

A New Start

About a month ago I sent this message to all our growers/vendors and now I’d like to share it with you.

I’ve decided to step away from the market as the owner/manager starting January 1st. After deciding to step back, I had to think of someone who had the passion and time to dedicate to the market, someone who could step in and take over for me.

Introducing Jennifer Martinez…

If you’ve ordered from the market recently, hopefully you were able to meet a new friendly face, Jennifer Martinez. Jennifer has been in the local farming community for the past several years—two as a regular volunteer on a few local farms, and three working at Cane Creek Farm as the CSA manager. In 2016, Jennifer, her husband, and two children purchased an old family homestead situated on 22 acres in Ball Ground, and last year they finally realized their dream of starting their own farm by moving onto the property. Taking their cue from a Wendell Berry poem, Jennifer named their farm “Reverdure,” which means “to make green again.” When she’s not homeschooling her children, you can find Jennifer renovating the home and working in the garden. I’m so happy that I found Jennifer Martinez. She shares the knowledge, passion and dedication for locally grown food and I’m confident she will continue the market in a way we’ll all be happy about.

My Dad and I started The Cumming Harvest over 7 years ago and we honestly feel that being at the market makes us feel good. The market is not a JOB and it’s not WORK, it was built from a passion to support local organically growing farmers. I’ve been able to take the knowledge I’ve gained from our local farmers to help Coal Mountain ES start their garden program. I’ve gained enough knowledge to feel confident to speak at schools about our local farmers, and have shown kids how to make green smoothies, kale salad and eggplant fries from local food. I just recently spoke at the Food for Thought conference sponsored by the Georgia Farmers Market Association and discussed our Locally Grown farmers market. If I’m still called, I will always gladly advocate for our local farmers. I’m so thankful for everything the market has given me and the people I’ve met. Without your support, we couldn’t have continued or would want to. We are grateful to everyone!

My family has grown up with the market being part of our Saturday routine. My oldest is now 16 and a Junior and my youngest is 13 and just started middle school. When I started the market they were 9 and 5. They’ve always supported me, sometimes coming over to help, visiting farmers, and eating all the new local food recipes I’ve tried. Each week is flying by, they are growing up so fast before I know it they’ll be in college. As you know with college brings new expenses and although I love the market, it’s not a paying job, it’s all done out of love. So on November 1st, 2016, I received my Georgia Real Estate license and began working for Keller Williams. I’ve spent this last year juggling the market and real estate pretty well but with a lack of focus and passion I had before.

So, starting January 1st, Jennifer will own and manage the Cumming Harvest with a fresh, energetic spirit and passion that it needs. My Dad, Bill, will continue helping on Saturday’s and I will come in when I miss everyone as I’m sure will be often. But if you don’t see me at the market and wonder what I’m doing just know I’m “crushing it” selling houses. ;)

Thank you all for everything and please keep in touch!
