The WHITE OAK PASTURES monthly order is coming to a close. Please email thecummingharvest@gmail.com with your order of pastured chicken, pork, sausage and other meats no later than MONDAY, MAY 21.

The Cumming Harvest would like to welcome its newest grower, Fill Ministries. Many of you are familiar with the organization Meals By Grace. This organization works with local schools and churches in Forsyth and Dawson counties to identify food-insecure families who have young children, and provides them with food on a weekly basis. Last year, Meals By Grace provided local families with over 60,000 meals, a fact that boggles my mind and hurts my heart.

Steven Daniels, the man in charge of the Meals By Grace operation, recognized that these families, just as much if not more than others, need and deserve fresh, organic food. Rather than attempt to source produce on a weekly basis, he decided to start a farm and grow it for them. But it needed to be a farm that could incorporate a multitude of volunteers, mostly community members with no farming skills and possibly limited physical ability, and it needed to produce a LOT of vegetables.

With this in mind, Steven created Fill Ministries, an aquaponics farm in north Forsyth County that grows lettuce, spinach and tomatoes. (Aquaponics is a system that employs growing plants and fish in an environment where each benefits the other.) In addition to the aquaponics greenhouse, Fill Ministries Aquaponics Farm is also in the process of establishing a Certified Organic garden where they will grow summer vegetables and a variety of berries. The majority of the food grown goes directly to the families that his ministry serves.

The Cumming Harvest, its farmers and customers, have an amazing opportunity to support this organization that provides struggling local families with organically-grown food. Fill Ministries recently approached The Cumming Harvest regarding becoming a vendor, and over spring break, Suzanne and I toured the farm. As of this month, the greenhouse is in full production and extra lettuce not used by Meals By Grace will be sold to the public via The Cumming Harvest. All proceeds from sales go back to Fill Ministries. I hope that you are as delighted as I am to welcome this new grower to the Cumming Harvest community.

This week on The Cumming Harvest

This Week

Market opens at 10AM

The Cumming Harvest would not be year-round market that it is without farms like Phoenix Gardens. In 2005, Phoenix Gardens began as a hobby farm for Brennan and Gwendolyn Washington, originally of New York; soon however, their passion for providing their community with good food led them make Phoenix Gardens into a full-fledged urban farm. Today, their Certified Naturally Grown farm is situated on 2.5 acres in Lawrenceville and is a blend of traditional row crops, raised beds and hoop houses. They, along with their son, run it year- round.
But Gwendolyn and Brennan aren’t farmers only. Over the years the Washingtons have put themselves at the heart of the fight to create sustainable local food systems. Brennan founded the Georgia Farmers Market Association (of which The Cumming Harvest is a member), and has sat on the board of Georgia Organics, Southern SARE and the Georgia Food Policy Council. Recently, Brennan was named to the 2018 BALLE Local Economy Fellowship, a group of innovators across America and Canada working to build local economies that work for all.
Tragically, in 2015, Gwendolyn and Brennan suffered a devastating fire that led them to stop operations for 18 months. But Phoenix Gardens has truly lived up to its name, rising from the ashes reborn, renewed, and very much alive. Currently, Phoenix Gardens is working on Organic certification and is expanding into the realm of jams, jellies and pickles. They have also recently added a flock of Araucana chickens who lay the most beautiful blue eggs.
Please come on out on Saturday to meet Gwendolyn, who will be our Farmer of the Week. You won’t be sorry that you did!

What did you think of the market pickup setup last week? As The Cumming Harvest welcomes new customers, we are quickly outgrowing our little home. So while the weather is nice, Saturday morning pickup will be outside!

Did you get to meet Reggie at the market last Saturday? Grow with the Flow, aka Reggie and Roger Ramos, joined the market last fall and have been providing us with greens for most of the winter. So it’s about time they had a proper introduction! Catalyzed by their mother’s battle with cancer eight years ago, these two GA Tech grads and military vets decided they seriously wanted to address the kinds of food that they ate. After a series of internships in the Atlanta area (one of which with own Cane Creek Farm), they were ready to grow their own food but were faced with the challenge of acquiring affordable farmable land in urban Atlanta. As an innovative solution to their own limited access to land, and in an effort to replace the wasteful American lawn, these two engineers have established Certified Naturally Grown “market gardens” in homeowners’ lawns in their Tucker neighborhood, using their own lawn as “home base.” Participating homeowners in turn receive a CSA-style share of vegetables each week. Known affectionately as “the Grow bros,” their slogan is “Grow- don’t mow!” Reggie and Roger also work with other organizations in their neighborhood, such as Tucker Orchard Guild, to strengthen their communities’ access to fresh food. Reggie recently became a Food Innovation Fellow through Food Well Alliance and is on a mission to bring a mobile food processing/ refrigeration unit to other farmers who may not have the funds to purchase necessary but expensive equipment. These modest brothers bring their produce to The Cumming Harvest each week, so let’s support the good that they do for us!

Welcome back Weedy Soil and Sweet Pea Garden! Veggies are abundant!

HomeSpun Baking Company has a new product: check out their gluten-free sandwich bread.

Southern Grass Meat is having a SALE on a variety of items, including Back Ribs, Knuckle Bones, and Ground Beef.

There is just a little bit of Meadow Valley Amish CHEESE left. We have Baby Swiss, Gouda, Havarti, Cheddar, and Pepper Jack.

STRAWBERRIES BY WATSONIA FARMS are on the market again this week.

Cultured Traditions won’t be listing this week, but they will be back on May 12!
