The Weblog

The Online Market is open for ordering from 8 AM Wednesday till 8 PM on Thursday.
Spring time is upon us again. The planting of vegetables and flowers is in full spead as we work to provide an aboundance of fresh new products. Please feel free to make your selections from the great products available this week.

Remember the New Customer Referral Program
From March 20 through June 30

How it Works
1. Tell a friend about the CUMMING HARVEST farmers market.
2. Have them register at cumming.locallygrown.net. (the market managers will contact all new customers to ask who referred them)
3. After their third purchase (3 different weeks), your credit will be applied to your account.
Thank you for sharing your love of healthy food and for helping to support our local growers!

This week on The Cumming Harvest

This Week

Market opens at 10AM

Doug’s Wild Alaskan Salmon is back at the market, this time with honey brine smoked salmon and halibut, as well as our favorites, 5-lb portions, 5-lb fillets, and salmon burgers.

A&A Alta Cucina will be making the monthly delivery this week, so make sure to shop their balsamic vinegars reductions, infused and dipping extra virgin olive oils, tomato sauces, pestos and balsamic jams. Check out their newest product, Vidalia Balsamic Jam; it won the Good Food Awards in January and it’s also a finalist for the Flavor of Georgia 2018. Try some and see what the fuss is about!

Do you need a gift for someone special? A&A Alta Cucina has some amazing gift baskets for sale, including the “Georgia On My Mind” Gourmet Gift Set, the “Oil & Vinegar Crate Gift Set,” the “Olive Oil Sampler Set” and more. Look under the “Gift Bags & Box Sets” category to see what’s available.

Cultured Traditions is back this week with their famous garlic dill pickles and other inventive krauts and ferments.

This is the last weekend to place a White Oak Pastures order for March. The order will be placed on March 19 and be ready for pickup on March 31. Place your order for pastured chicken, pork and sausage at the market or email Amber at whiteoakpasturesorder@gmail.com or Jennifer at thecummingharvest@gmail.com

Finally, for those of you who are up to the eating local challenge, try to plan one meal this week sourcing ingredients from The Cumming Harvest. For me, I think I’ll make a soup. . . And I’d love to hear what meals you come up with! If you’d like to share, please send recipes and pictures to thecummingharvest@gmail.com.

It’s March already and time to place your next order with White Oak Pastures for their pastured chicken, pork and sausage products. Amber, a Cumming Harvest customer, has generously volunteered to assist me with the order-taking process. Thank you Amber! Please note that the prices on the order sheet have changed to reflect tax this time.

If you’re looking forward to getting outside and planting a garden (after this last cold snap that we are about to have), consider purchasing Heirloom Garden’s potted herbs, sold in quart containers. To find out what herbs Paula has available, look under the Plants category.

The Cumming Harvest is looking for a few special volunteers to help with various projects. All volunteer positions are compensated with market credit after a brief training period.

EAT LOCAL
Have you ever thought about cutting the grocery store habit and eating mostly local foods? Inspired by Barbara Kingsolver’s book Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, which speaks to her own convictions on food and community, Lynn Pugh (of Cane Creek Farm) has felt called to embark on the journey of eating (mostly) locally-produced foods. Realizing that to do so requires quite a bit of resourcefulness and (mostly emotional) support, Lynn has recruited me to join her and would like to know if there are others out there who are also interested in sharing the joys and challenges of this journey. As Kingsolver herself said, “We live in a culture that’s so thoroughly entitled to have absolutely everything in absolutely every season. It’s just inconceivable that anyone could intentionally give up 90 percent of your choices and not drag around missing them every minute." And yet, that is what we intend to do- joyfully!

Admittedly, the edibles that will be the toughest to find locally are often the ones we enjoy the most— pasta, flour, chocolate and coffee. So to be clear—each person sets his or her own rules. I will certainly not be giving up coffee, nor will I let all of those bananas sitting in my freezer go to waste! However, Lynn and I are invigorated by the challenge of switching up what’s on our plates and excited that there are others who also want to connect with local food sources, create community and strengthen our local food economy. Therefore, if you want to share your own experiences in sourcing and eating (mostly) local foods, PLEASE contact me or Lynn. We plan on having a many-faceted approach to supporting each other, from assisting each other in sourcing those hard-to-get items, to enjoying potluck meals together. Bon appetit!

What is the market missing? Are there any products that you would like to see offered by local artisans and farmers? Please email theucmmingharvest@gmail.com to let us know what your food interests and needs are!

Wohoo! More and more veggies are back on the market this week. Order your fill of arugula, beets, broccoli, carrots, collards, kale, leeks, spinach, and more! Let’s give a big thanks to our tireless farmers who continue to grow amazing food for us all year long!

There are just a few blocks of Meadow Valley Farm cheese left; make sure to order one before they’re all gone.

Speaking of getting one before they’re gone (again), Good Shepherd Herbals has replenished the shelves with Elderberry Syrup.

After a few weeks off of the market, Royal Rose Bakery is back with delicious quiches and pot pies. Enjoy homemade food without having to make it yourself!

Ancient Awakenings is listing our favorite probiotic foods— Coconut Kefir, Water Kefir, cultured veggies, and Kombucha.

The White Oak Pastures order has been placed and will be ready for pick up on March 3. Don’t worry if you missed the deadline this time; we will be ordering from them monthly. Just let Jennifer know what chicken, pork and sausage products you would like before March 19.

Have you ever thought about volunteering with The Cumming Harvest? Contact Jennifer at thecummingharvest@gmail.com for more details. We are looking for a few special people who can help us out!

This has been a rough winter! Keep sickness at bay with Southern Essential’s Anti-Bacterial Essential Oil Blend. This blend of highly effective essential oils helps to reduce and kill bacteria and germs that can cause sickness. Try a few drops in your cleaning water, washer or dishwasher to boost the cleaning power and eliminate odors. Or use a few drops on your homes’ heating and air conditioning filter to help reduce airborne bacteria, or use in a room diffuser for a single room effect.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meadow Valley Farm cheese is back on the market. Choose from Cheddar, Sharp Cheddar, Havarti, Baby Swiss, Pepper Jack, and more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Make hamburger night easy with Indian Creek Angus’ hamburger patties. Each patty is 5.5 oz and makes a most delicious burger, especially when topped with Simply Southard’s Hot and Sweet Pickled Jalapenos. Or if you’re in the mood for something different, make lamb burgers with Bramberi Farms’ ground lamb, topped with arugula from Heirloom Gardens, and served with Cultured Traditions’ Garlic Dill pickles on the side. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

HomeSpun Baking Company is on vacation this week but will return soon with their gluten-free bakery goods.
