From March 20 through June 30

How it Works
1. Tell a friend about the CUMMING HARVEST farmers market.
2. Have them register at cumming.locallygrown.net. (the market managers will contact all new customers to ask who referred them)
3. After their third purchase (3 different weeks), your credit will be applied to your account.
Thank you for sharing your love of healthy food and for helping to support our local growers!

This week on The Cumming Harvest

This Week

Market opens at 10AM

Beginning this month, we will be working with White Oak Pastures in Bluffton, GA to place a once-a-month pre-order for their pastured chicken, pork and sausage.

White Oak Pastures has been owned and managed by the Harris family for five generations. Their chickens roam completely unconfined in pastures, foraging for bugs and grubs in the soil, and are also offered a non-GMO grain supplement. Their chickens are also a Step 5+ in the Global Animal Partnership, Certified Humane and Animal Welfare Approved.
Their hogs breed, gestate, farrow, and grow up in the woods. They are never kept in confinement. They eat what they find as they forage, plus peanuts that they are given, and the cracked eggs from pastured hens. They are supplemented with non-GMO feed. Their hogs are a Step 5 in the Global Animal Partnership and Certified Humane. They raise heritage breeds: Tamworth, Berkshire, and Gloucester Old Spots.

WHITE OAK PASTURES PRODUCTS WILL NOT BE LISTED ON THE WEBSITE; THEY ARE ONLY AVAILABLE VIA PRE-ORDER.

1. TO ORDER, place a pre-order during the first two weeks of the month by emailing Jennifer at thecummingharvest@gmail.com or by filling out an order form at market on Saturday morning.

2. Customer orders are due no later than February 19. White Oak Pastures will then fill the order and ship the following week.

3. You will be notified when your order is ready to be picked up at the Saturday market; since February is a short month, this month’s order will be ready for pick up on March 3. You will pay for your order at time of pick up, as usual.

Email Jennifer with any questions or to receive the available items and price list.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meadow Valley Cheese is back on the market. Cheeses available include Cheddar, Sharp Cheddar, Baby Swiss, Gouda, Pepper Jack, or Meadow (Monterey) Jack.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Need a dinner idea? Try pairing Doug’s Wild Alaskan Salmon fillet with Lillian’s Sweet Hawaiian Sauce and a side of sauteed baby bok choi from Leilani’s Garden or over a bed of wilted spinach from Heirloom Gardens. Delicious!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Daily Bread’s Organic Vegan Spelt Bread Contains ONLY olive oil, sea salt, local honey, organic spelt and yeast. Spelt is a wonderful “nutty” and digestible grain that is usually well tolerated by those with gluten or wheat intolerance issues (but is NOT for persons that have been diagnosed as “celiac.”) This is a much denser loaf than their Ezekiel or Honey whole Wheat and is equally delicious.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ancient Awakenings is back this week with their cultured veggies, coconut kefir, and kombucha.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are almost out of Good Shepherd Herbal’s Elderberry Syrup again, so grab a bottle before it’s all gone.
Please welcome our newest egg sellers, a husband/wife team, Alice and Jim Hackney of Rocky Top Farm. Their hens are fed non-GMO and soy-free feed and free-range on their property, found in south Forsyth.
Back in Time Farm is listing their pastured poultry this week. Although they are sold out of whole birds until May, they have a variety of sausages, as well as boneless, skinless breasts. Stock your freezers!
Do you like Naan? HomeSpun Baking Company has a new product on the market, gluten-free Naan bread. It is absolutely delicious warmed up! Eat it with your favorite hummus or Indian dish, or as an open-face flatbread sandwich.
Alta Cucina will be making the monthly delivery this week, so make sure to shop their balsamic vinegars reductions, infused and dipping extra virgin olive oils, tomato sauces, pestos and balsamic jams.
Cultured Traditions is back this week with their famous garlic dill pickles and other inventive krauts and ferments. Ginger tumeric kraut sounds like a perfect tonic for the gut.
Elderberry Syrup is back on the shelf! Good Shepherd Herbals has also restocked Beulah Balm.
Below is a message from My Daily Bread:
My Daily Bread wishes to share some exciting news with you… we are under new ownership! Our friends at Leilani’s Gardens have assumed ownership over the company and we couldn’t be more excited. Leilani’s farm and My Daily Bread share many of the same values and goals which include providing healthy, natural and organic products to our customers. When the original owners of My Daily Bread decided it was time to hang up their aprons, it seemed like a ‘natural’ fit to bring the bakery to the farm.
Don’t worry – we’ve kept all of our recipes, and even our baker, Bruce, so you’ll still receive the same quality baked goods that you have come to expect from us at My Daily Bread. Not only can you expect the same products, but we hope to bring some exciting new additions to the table using the fresh produce we’ll now have, literally, in our own back yard.
Our customers are very important to us, and we value your patronage. We are pleased to continue serving the community and people who have helped us grow into the bakery we are today, and we look forward to the new opportunities that lie ahead.
Thank you for your support!
This week on The Cumming Harvest
The market opens at 10AM.
Our egg supply is very low this time of year. Like most living things, a chicken’s egg-laying process is greatly affected by the amount of light it is exposed to, decreasing in the winter when there is less than 14 hours of sunlight in the day. If there’s not enough light and warmth to raise a baby chick, then there won’t be any eggs. This period of rest is important to maintaining a healthy flock.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ancient Awakenings has a new product on the market this week, Spicy Cultured Veggies. These have the same great benefits and recipe as their regular Cultured Veggies, but with added Organic Crushed Red Pepper Flakes. Rich in enzymes, vitamins and minerals, these “superfoods” contribute greatly to healing and building your inner ecosystem! Cultured veggies help to improve digestion, alleviate acid reflux and other digestive upsets, and control cravings for sweets. Spicy Cultured Veggies would be great on tacos.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Indian Creek Angus has several products on the market this week, including Chuck Roast, Brisket, and several variety packages that include steaks, cube steak, skirt steak, ground beef, short ribs, and boneless stew. One variety pack totals 15 pounds @ $7.50/lb, what a deal!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pet treats
Treat your dog this week — Southern Grass Meat is selling 4-6 lb packages of beef short ribs (broken seal) as pet food.

This Week

Chicken is back! And the newsletter is early!

There have been a few requests for the weekly email to be sent out early in order to give you time to read about and look at the specials before the market opens. So although the market still opens at 10AM every WEDNESDAY, you will begin to receive the newsletter no later than 8AM Wednesday morning.

Please welcome our newest farmer to the market, Back in Time Farm. I’m excited to announce that they will be selling their pastured poultry on the market every other week, starting this week. Check out their current listings— they have plenty of small whole birds, Sweet Italian Chicken Sausage, Boneless Skinless Chicken breasts, Breakfast Sausage, and more. Stock your freezer; they will sell out quickly!

Doug’s Wild Salmon re-stocked the cooler with more 5 lb portions, the ever-popular salmon burger and LOX.

If, like me, you have seen Cultured Tradition’s listing for Jun and wondered what it is, let me tell you: it is similar to Kombucha, but instead of being made with black tea and sugar, Jun is made using green tea and honey, both of which are well known for their health benefits. Cultured Tradition’s Jun is brewed from organic loose leaf green tea and purified water, and raw local Georgia honey.

If you enjoyed the Amish cheese from Meadow Valley farm and would like to order more, please let me know what varieties you would like on Saturday or by sending an email to thecummingharvest@gmail.com. This time around I’d like to order smaller cuts, less than 1 lb, unless you specify otherwise.

One final note: I’m sure that you have noticed the drop in the availability of vegetables on the market. While the prolonged cold weather is helpful in reducing populations of unwanted pests, it also takes a toll on the veggies, even those grown in hoop houses, and our farmers may take a few weeks off during the coldest part of January and February. This week Heirloom Gardens and Leilani’s have a few vegetables listed, including salad mix, spinach, kale and carrots.

This week on The Cumming Harvest

Chicken will be back on the market beginning next week. I am excited to announce that Back in Time Farm will be delivering chicken to The Cumming Harvest on a bi-weekly basis. Ruth and Bill Hayden operate a small, 14 acre family farm located just around the corner in Barrow County. They pasture red broilers, a slower-growing chicken that produces a more flavorful bird. Their birds live in portable chicken tractors that are moved to fresh grass daily and are fed a non- GMO feed. Check out their grower profile for more information and for pictures.

Ancient Awakenings is back this week. Have you tried their Kefir?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With so many people out there feeling under the weather, don’t forget about Good Shepherd Herbals Elderberry Syrup! It’s great for colds or flu, helping your immune system in general so it’s good to keep around when you start to feel under the weather. It’s a dark, sweet syrup that the entire family will enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Veggies
Even though several of our farmers grow their vegetables in hoop houses that offer protection from the cold, it always happens this time of year when the temperatures drop below freezing for an extended period of time, that we run short on our supply of vegetables. Enjoy what is available, knowing that is is fresher and healthier than anything you will find in the grocery store. As a bonus, cold weather makes the greens sweeter.
